In the language of flowers, it has had various symbolic meanings. Its color may indicate the love of truth or, conversely, the truth of love, the virtue of humility, or humble modesty, is a symbol of faithfulness, modesty, and simplicity, and several legends tell of violets springing up on the graves of saints. European folktales associate violets with death and mourning and it is a powerful force that counteracts and works against evil.

Topically, violet is used as a poultice, compress, infused oil and salve in the treatment of dry or chafed skin, cosmetic oils or washes, abrasions, insect bites, eczema, varicose veins and hemorrhoids. It is cooling, soothing and anti-inflammatory. Violets have a cold and moist temperment, and are used to cool any heat or distemperature of the body, either inwardly or outwardly, as the inflammation in the eyes, to drink the decoction of the leaves and flowers made with water or wine, or to apply them poultice wise to the grieved places; it likewise eases sleeplessness, headaches from sleeplessness, or any pains arising of heat if applied in the same manner or with oil of Roses.
